Bhutan Quick Facts:

Bhutan

Bhutan is a small Himalayan kingdom renowned for its breathtaking mountain scenery, ancient monasteries, vibrant Buddhist culture, and unique approach to measuring national success through Gross National Happiness rather than purely economic indicators. Nestled between India and China, Bhutan covers approximately 38,394 square kilometers and is one of the world's most distinctive and environmentally conscious nations.

The capital and largest city is Thimphu, a charming city that blends traditional Bhutanese architecture with modern development. Unlike most capitals, Thimphu has no traffic lights and retains a relaxed atmosphere surrounded by forested mountains.

Bhutan has a population of approximately 800,000 people. Dzongkha is the official language, although English is widely used in education, tourism, and government. The national currency is the Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN), which is pegged to the Indian Rupee.

Bhutan has remained independent throughout its history and is one of the few countries that has never been colonized. The country transitioned from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy in 2008 while maintaining many of its traditional cultural values.

One of Bhutan's most iconic landmarks is Tiger's Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang), dramatically perched on a cliff approximately 900 meters above the Paro Valley. It is considered Bhutan's most sacred site and one of the most spectacular monasteries in the world.

Another important destination is Punakha Dzong, often regarded as the most beautiful dzong (fortress-monastery) in the country. Situated at the confluence of two rivers, it serves as an important religious and historical center.

Visitors also enjoy exploring Dochula Pass, famous for its 108 memorial chortens and panoramic Himalayan views, as well as Phobjikha Valley, a scenic glacial valley known for its natural beauty and black-necked cranes.

Bhutan is a global leader in environmental conservation. More than 70% of the country remains forested, and Bhutan is one of the few carbon-negative nations in the world, absorbing more carbon dioxide than it produces.

The country's landscape consists of dramatic mountains, deep valleys, rivers, forests, and alpine meadows. Outdoor activities such as hiking, trekking, birdwatching, and cultural tourism are among the primary attractions for visitors.

Agriculture, hydropower, tourism, and forestry contribute significantly to Bhutan's economy. Hydroelectric power exports to neighboring countries are particularly important.

Traditional Bhutanese cuisine is known for its bold flavors and use of chili peppers. Popular dishes include ema datshi (chilies and cheese), red rice, momos (dumplings), and various meat and vegetable stews.

Archery is Bhutan's national sport and plays an important role in cultural life throughout the country.

How is Mobile Coverage in Bhutan:

Mobile coverage in Bhutan is generally very good throughout Thimphu, Paro, Punakha, Phuentsholing, Bumthang, and most populated valleys. Operators such as B-Mobile and TashiCell provide extensive 4G coverage across major towns, tourist destinations, and transportation routes. Coverage is generally reliable in populated regions and popular trekking areas, although travelers venturing into remote Himalayan valleys, high mountain passes, or isolated wilderness areas may occasionally encounter weaker signals. Using an international eSIM or SIM card with Bhutan roaming support can help maintain connectivity throughout much of the country.

What to Expect When Landing in Bhutan

If you're arriving in Bhutan for tourism, business, or cultural travel, you will most likely arrive through Paro International Airport, the country's primary international gateway.

Immigration and Entry

Upon arrival, travelers proceed through immigration where officials review passports, visas, and supporting travel documentation. Most international visitors must obtain a visa before arrival through an authorized Bhutanese tour operator or approved travel arrangement.

Keep the following readily accessible:

Passport with sufficient validity

Visa approval documentation

Return or onward travel information

Tour itinerary or hotel reservation

Travel insurance documentation

Proof of required travel authorization

Baggage Claim and Customs

After immigration, collect your luggage and proceed through customs screening. Customs procedures are generally straightforward, though travelers should declare commercial goods, professional equipment, drones, large amounts of currency, or restricted items when required.

Mobile Connectivity

Local SIM cards are available through Bhutanese mobile operators and can often be purchased after arrival with passport identification.

Travelers who install an international eSIM or activate an international SIM card before departure can often connect shortly after landing, depending on roaming agreements and device compatibility.

Transportation from the Airport

Transportation options commonly include:

Tour operator transportation

Hotel transfers

Private drivers

Official taxis

Rental vehicles with drivers

It is recommended to:

Arrange transportation before arrival

Coordinate airport pickup through your hotel or tour operator

Carry some local currency for smaller purchases

Confirm transportation details in advance

Most visitors travel through organized itineraries, making airport transfers straightforward.

Currency and Payments

The local currency is the Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN).

Credit cards are accepted at many:

Hotels

Tourism businesses

Restaurants

Retail shops in larger towns

Cash remains useful for:

Local markets

Small businesses

Rural communities

Independent vendors

ATMs are available in major towns such as Thimphu and Paro.

Internet and Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is available in many hotels, cafés, restaurants, and tourism facilities. Mobile data networks are generally reliable in major towns and tourist regions. Internet speeds may vary depending on location and terrain, particularly in remote mountain areas. Airport Wi-Fi may be available but should not be relied upon exclusively for important communications or travel arrangements.

Best Preparation

Activate your eSIM or SIM card before departure

Arriving with mobile connectivity already active can make your first hours in Bhutan much smoother, especially if you need maps, hotel directions, transportation coordination, trekking information, tour confirmations, business communications, translation services, or access to travel information immediately after landing.
