Chad Quick Facts:
Chad is a vast landlocked country located in north-central Africa and is often called the "Dead Heart of Africa" because of its central position on the continent. Covering approximately 1.28 million square kilometers, Chad is one of Africa's largest countries and borders Libya, Sudan, the Central African Republic, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Niger.
The capital and largest city is N'Djamena, situated on the Chari River near the border with Cameroon. N'Djamena serves as the country's political, economic, and cultural center and is home to much of Chad's commercial activity.
Chad has a population of more than 19 million people and is one of Africa's most culturally diverse nations. More than 200 ethnic groups live within its borders, speaking over 100 languages and dialects. French and Arabic are the country's official languages. The national currency is the Central African CFA franc (XAF).
Chad gained independence from France on August 11, 1960. The country's name originates from Lake Chad, which historically served as one of Africa's largest freshwater lakes and remains an important source of water and livelihood for millions of people across the region.
The country's geography is remarkably diverse. Northern Chad is dominated by the Sahara Desert, central regions feature the arid Sahel, while the south contains fertile savannas and agricultural land. This variety of landscapes supports a wide range of cultures, wildlife, and ecosystems.
One of Chad's most spectacular natural attractions is Ennedi Massif, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its dramatic rock formations, arches, canyons, and ancient rock art. The region is considered one of the Sahara's most stunning landscapes.
Another important landmark is Ounianga Lakes, a group of lakes located deep within the Sahara Desert. These lakes are remarkable because they have survived for thousands of years despite being surrounded by one of the driest environments on Earth.
Agriculture and livestock are the foundation of Chad's economy. Cotton is one of the country's most important exports, while millet, sorghum, peanuts, and livestock production support millions of people throughout the country.
Chad is also an oil-producing nation, with petroleum exports contributing significantly to government revenue and economic development.
Traditional Chadian cuisine varies by region but commonly includes millet, sorghum, rice, meat, fish, vegetables, and peanut-based sauces. Tea is widely consumed, particularly in northern regions influenced by Saharan and Arab cultures.
Music, storytelling, traditional dance, and craftsmanship play important roles in preserving the cultural heritage of Chad's many ethnic communities.
How is Mobile Coverage in Chad:
Mobile coverage in Chad is generally strongest in N'Djamena, Moundou, Sarh, Abéché, and other major population centers. Mobile operators such as Airtel Chad and Moov Africa Chad provide service in many urban areas, with 3G and limited 4G coverage available in select locations. Coverage outside major cities can be limited, particularly in remote desert regions, national parks, border areas, and sparsely populated parts of the Sahara. Travelers should expect service gaps when traveling long distances through rural areas. Using a multi-network international eSIM or SIM card can help maximize connectivity where partner networks are available.
What to Expect When Landing in Chad
If you're arriving in Chad for business, humanitarian work, government activities, or visiting family, you will most likely arrive through N'Djamena International Airport, the country's primary international gateway.
Immigration and Entry
Upon arrival, travelers proceed through immigration where officials review passports, visas, and supporting travel documentation. Processing times can vary depending on flight schedules and passenger volumes.
Keep the following readily accessible:
Passport with sufficient validity
Visa or approved travel authorization if applicable
Return or onward travel information
Hotel reservation or local address
Proof of yellow fever vaccination if required
Travel insurance documentation if requested
Baggage Claim and Customs
After immigration, collect your luggage and proceed through customs screening. Customs procedures are generally straightforward, but travelers should be prepared to declare commercial goods, large amounts of currency, satellite communication equipment, or other regulated items if required.
Mobile Connectivity
Local SIM cards are available in Chad, though activation may require passport registration and local verification procedures. Availability at airport locations may vary depending on operating hours.
Travelers who install an international eSIM or activate an international SIM card before departure can often connect shortly after landing, avoiding the need to locate a mobile provider immediately upon arrival.
Transportation from the Airport
Taxis, private transportation services, and hotel transfers are commonly available at N'Djamena International Airport.
It is recommended to:
Confirm pricing before departing
Use trusted or pre-arranged transportation providers
Carry some local currency for smaller purchases
Arrange hotel transportation in advance whenever possible
Road conditions and travel times can vary depending on weather and traffic conditions.
Currency and Payments
The local currency is the Central African CFA Franc (XAF).
While some larger hotels and businesses may accept credit cards, cash remains the primary payment method for many transactions, including:
Taxis
Local markets
Small restaurants
Independent shops
Transportation services
ATMs are available in N'Djamena and some larger cities, though availability may be limited compared to major international destinations.
Internet and Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is available at some hotels, business centers, and government facilities, although speeds and reliability can vary. Airport Wi-Fi availability may be limited, and travelers should not rely on it for critical communications, navigation, or transportation arrangements.
Best Preparation
Activate your eSIM or SIM card before departure
Arriving with mobile connectivity already active can make your first hours in Chad considerably smoother, especially if you need maps, hotel directions, transportation coordination, business communications, security contacts, or access to important travel information immediately after landing.
